CLC again plans to send ‘Hope for the Holidays’
Year after year, our amazing Lutheran church communities across the country come together to share hope with those seeking safety in the United States. We at Christ Lutheran once again have the opportunity to join in those efforts. With a simple message of hope in a Christmas card, we can help immigrant families know that someone, somewhere in America cares.
The Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service (LIRS), a part of our national church organization since 1939, is sponsoring its tenth “Hope for the Holidays” program this holiday season. Why? Because this year alone, the LIRS and its network of supporters report that they have welcomed thousand of new “Americans,” individuals and families, seeking safety in our country, including Afghans and Ukrainians. “Our new neighbors have persevered through incredible challenges to get here – and while many are no longer in immediate danger, they are still navigating life in their new communities and the legal challenges of their asylum status,” writes Dan Beirne, LIRS director for Mobilization and Faith Relations. “Many have not been or will not be able to reunite with their families. The challenges of their journeys are not over.”
By participating in Hope for the Holidays, we are extending a touch of hope and humanity to folks who still find themselves in a situation of painful waiting and uncertainty. Join us after services on Sunday, November 24th for a “card writing” party. We will have refreshments and plenty of coffee , and Christmas cards to spread a little Hope for the Holidays. We will have a list of suggested greetings in both English and Spanish – either is OK – as well as appropriate Bible verses in English and/or Spanish. You can include those in a Christmas card, or you can write your own greeting. Anything hopeful will help.
